I had a wonderful time at my recent book reading of Gallows Hill: The Investigative Paranormal Society, Book 1 at Scheler Humanities Forum in Linderman Library at Lehigh University: Bethelehem, PA.

This was a relaxed affair, with students and colleagues in attendance. I spoke about both books in this series, including Maledicus: The Paranormal Society, Book 1.  After a brief introduction, I read several excerpts and then answered some questions.

I always enjoy this kind of event, and as you can see from the photograph, it was informal and relaxing. And the room in this remarkable library is wonderful, filled with beautiful, old bookshelves and some of the library’s collections of rare texts.

To all who attended, thank you!

I Am Proud Of My Students!

I feel blessed that I am able to follow two of my passions in my life–teaching and writing. I spend a great deal of time in this blog speaking about my writing, but now I want to talk about one of the classes I teach at college.

I love all of my classes, but something extraordinary happened this semester in one of my classes at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. This was part of a cluster–two courses taught by two different professors about a central issue or question. This cluster’s name is America on The Cusp of Crisis: The Literature and History of A Nation in Turmoil, and it is about the history and writing of the Civil War of the United States of America.

I was also fortunate to be able to work with Dr. William Feeney, who taught the history course. Dr. Feeney is one of the most talented teachers I have ever had the honor of knowing, and I have known many in my now 25 or so years of teaching English at college. Dr. Feeney is a scholar on the Civil War and is deeply invested in teaching and finding new and challenging ways for his students to learn. Any student who has him as a professor is fortunate.

The students were given a project, working in small groups, to conceptualize, design, and print a model of a Civil War monument. This was not working on an existing monument, but creating a new one about an aspect of the Civil War they found important and interesting. The students would use the college’s 3-D printer to make the model. They also had to write a dedication speech and a reflective essay on their projects. The students were aided in the design and printing by Instructional Technologist Jordan Noyes.

The 4 groups created monuments to Civil War horses, Clara Barton, The Sanitary Commission, and the Battle of Shiloh.  All of the models of the monuments demonstrated an abundance of work, planning, and execution. I was astounded by their efforts.

The students presented the models, including a ribbon cutting and a reading of their dedication speech. They then spoke about the process of their work. Their presentation was covered by the student newspaper The Muhlenberg Weekly. This was an exercise that included analysis, knowledge, creativity, design, and production, and I believe this work brought out the best in these students.

The models are now on display on the main floor of the Trexler Library of Muhlenberg College.

I am honored to have worked on this cluster with Dr. Feeney and with Jordan Noyes. I am deeply proud of the work of my students.

Last Night’s Book Reading of Maledicus: The Investigative Paranormal Society Book I

I had the good fortune of having a book reading at the wonderful Taylor Roasted CoffeeHouse in Northampton, PA last night.  The weather was not conducive to a large turnout because a nasty layer of sleet was falling, and driving was somewhat hazardous.  A few friends attended, and the event became a cozy discussion of my book and of writing in general.

As I always do when at this establishment, I had a very large cup of black coffee, and I consider the Taylor Roasted CoffeeHouse to have the best java in the entire Lehigh Valley, PA, if not everywhere!  They are presently working on redesigning their website, and I hope orders will be available for shipping anywhere. If that happens, I will highly recommend their coffee to coffee lovers everywhere!

I had my first book reading of my horror novel Maledicus: The Investigative Paranormal Society Book I on Tuesday at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, and it was a success! It was held in a lovely old reading room in Linderman Library, the humanities library at the university. Approximately 30 attended, and the whole event went extremely well.

I want to thank Heather Simoneau for arranging the event.  She is the Humanities Librarian at Lehigh University, and not only is she wonderful at helping students and faculty with research, but also she is excellent at her promotional abilities!

The reading went very well; I read excerpts from a few chapters, told some stories, and answered questions about the book and my writing. I was pleased to see a wide variety of people there, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and interested library patrons. To all who attended, thank you so much for helping to make my initial public reading a success!

Ghosts, Ghoulies, and Story-Telling in the Night

Standard

ghosts-572038_960_720

I had the good fortune this past Tuesday to have been asked by one of my First-Year Writing students at Lehigh University to tell ghost-stories at an event at a student dormitory. This young lady is a Gryphon, or Resident Advisor, and she organized an evening of food and scary stories for her charges. I usually tell ghost stories in my classes around Halloween, so I welcomed the opportunity.

I arrived at the appointed time, and we began at 6 P.M. The event was held in a common’s area, and approximately 50-60 students attended. I also have to say that my student, the Gryphon, did an excellent job with the organization of the occasion.

In addition to teaching and writing, I also love story-telling and have begun recently to consider building this highly enjoyable activity into a small business. That is still to be determined, but this evening went very well.

I began with a reading of the first chapter of my novel Maledicus: Investigative Paranormal Socity Book I. It is the horror novel, which I have mentioned before in my posts. I was curious to see how a group of college aged young people would respond to it, because the protagonists are in their late sixties, around their grandparents’ ages. They all seemed to enjoy it and gave positive feedback.

I then moved on to telling some of the ghost stories I have collected both from my family and from my personal experience. Unlike what many would expect of such tales, these were, on the whole, about friendly ghosts. The one that was the most effective was about a visitation from my deceased father both to my nephew, with whom he was very close and to me, while riding as a passenger in a car. Both happened within about 5-10 minutes of each other. The students looked engaged.

I ended with a ghost story I had written to take place immediately next to their dormitory. I had about two hours between my last class and this event, so sitting outside of Drown Hall (yes, that is the name of the English Department Building at Lehigh University), I wrote “The Mountain Man and the Hill” about a man in the 1700s before the University existed who vanished just outside their dorm. Now, I did make a mistake after reading this story to them. I admitted I had written it instead of maintaining the tale was true. Some of the students had believed it completely. I should have maintained a level of ambiguity about it.

I had a wonderful time, and I am grateful to my student and all those in attendance for the opportunity to tell ghost stories!

I anticipate being able to use these stories in the future to hold such events again.
