Diana from Myths of the Mirror blog has a writing challenge underway. You can find it here: https://mythsofthemirror.com/2022/01/09/writing-challenge-the-teetering-tbr-pile/.

Poets and writers are challenged to write a poem or story about their TBR. I have used poetic license and written a poem about how my TBR came into existence.

The Invasion by Robbie Cheadle

Into my library, so full

“Wake up and make room”

Orwell roared like a bull.

***

Shakespeare, Hardy, and Austen

Regarded him with distain

“You’re ‘cleared out’ trash!

You may not remain.”

***

“Now don’t be unkind,

you’re also not new.

We’ve been disregarded

and we’re in quite a stew.”

***

“Fine, we’ll move forward

and you go in behind”

Before I could stop them

my shelves were redesigned.

***

What a fabulous sight

to see the outcasts stowed

It filled my heart with delight

‘though the shelves overflowed.

***

And that was the start

of my sanctuary for books

Some people find it strange

and give me odd looks

***

“Books are inanimate

They can’t speak to you”

What nonsense they talk

If only they knew.

A Review Of House Bird By Robert Fillman

Standard

House Bird cover (final)

Robert Fillman’s new book House Bird is an excellent collection of his poetry, and it clearly positions him as one of the best poets in the U. S. A. Mr. Fillman has previously published a chapbook, November Weather Spell, and between both books, he is clearly a top-level poet. His work combines honesty, observation, powerful images, and reflections on life.

Mr. Fillman explores what exists on the surface of life and what goes below it also. This is a powerful confluence that illuminates his experiences as well as how we, the readers, view the world. His poetry explores the ordinary in life and transforms it into the extraordinary.

It is difficult to choose my favorite poems from this collection, because they are all excellent. Still, I would offer “House Bird” which gives the title of the book and “Blessing” as my two favorites, but I emphasize that they are all excellent poems!

If you love poetry, please do yourself a favor, and get this book. You will see that Robert Fillman is an extraordinary poet.

Robb read from his new book House Bird, and it was wonderful to be in attendance at this lovely store in Kutztown, PA and to experience the poet giving us his poetry directly. Robb’s poetry is extraordinary and powerful, and I believe that he is one of the best poets in the U. S. A. Robb’s writing is compelling, honest, imagistic, and moving. If you have not yet read any of his work and you enjoy poetry, you should order his new book as well as his previously published chapbook November Weather Spell. He is a poet you do not want to miss!

Grief Songs by Elizabeth Gauffreau–A Review

Standard

grief songs

Grief Songs by Elizabeth Gauffreau is a beautiful and compelling collection of poetry and photographs.

Gauffreau is a skilled story-teller, and her poetry and pictures create moving portraits of her family that draw the reader into her lovingly created images and remembrances.

Gauffreau uses the traditional Tanka form for her poetry, and she shows great skill in weaving her stories and memories together. For those who love poetry and family, this book will engage them and make them want to find their own family photos.

Grief Songs is an excellent book of poetry, it is lyrical and lovely, and I give it my complete recommendation. It will capture you and move you.

Beautifully done!

Open a new door: a collection of poems by Kim Blades and Robbie Cheadle–A Review

Open a New Door

I am delighted to offer a review of this excellent book of poetry!

This book is a lovely collection of poetry from two talented writers-Kim Blades and Robbie Cheadle! Their poetry is interwoven, as they explore important thematic issues in life in South Africa. The structure of the book is extremely effective: the poets use this format–“The Good”, “The Bad”, and “The Ugly” as they explore various aspects of life in their land: “God bless Africa”, “God bless my family and friends”, “God bless me”, and “God bless corporates and work.”

Both poets use a variety of poetic forms and show great observations about their world, their people, and themselves. This is a deeply compelling collection of poems.

While both poets offer a large variety of excellent pieces, I will highlight two that particularly stood out to me: “The boys under the bridge” by Robbie Cheadle, in which the poet’s concern for others and her deeply felt humanity is clear, and “Lessons learned in a rural African village” by Kim Blades, in which the poet speaks of the love of nature and humanity that she learned from her mother and her world.

If you love poetry, then please buy and read this book!

I give this wonderful collection of poetry 5 stars!

A Published Poem By My Friend Rob Fillman

Standard

I wanted to share the exciting news that my friend and colleague Robert Fillman has a poem in the journal Canary: A Literary Journal Of The Environmental Crisis.

The Science Teacher

by Robert Fillman

Robert lives in the Lehigh River Watershed in eastern Pennsylvania.

When old Mrs. Helmut got sick
Miss Carson was her substitute.
She was young, straight out of college,
voice as soft as the knee-high grass
in the fields behind the playground.
She taught us about recycling,
how to conserve more energy
by swapping incandescent bulbs,
hanging our wet clothes on the line,
unplugging old appliances.
She asked us if we had ever
heated water with a peanut,
forced our nine-year-old minds to think
beyond broken chalk and blackboards.
We made compost in the courtyard
out of our leftovers from lunch,
went on field trips to Cedar Creek,
gathered specimens to study.
She took us to the water works
where we watched sewage get filtered
into vats and sent to landfills.
My dad called her a tree hugger.
My mom thought she was too involved,
too motivated, much too bold
for her own good. Both couldn’t wait
for Mrs. Helmut to return,
for the leaves of enlightenment
to fall. The last time I saw her
she was staring out the window
of our fourth-grade classroom, singing
to herself while she watched a group
of sparrows and nuthatches peck
at the sunflower seed feeders
we made for her going away.

Congratulations to Robert Fillman on his publication!
