Progress On A First Draft

I made a breakthrough in terms of plot with the first draft of the political thriller I am currently working on! I have been continuing to work on it with discipline, doing about 1000 words a day, 5 days a week, but I had recently come up against a bit of a roadblock. It looked like a large tree had fallen across the writing path I was journeying on.

I woke up early this morning, which is unusual for me–I am far more of a night person than a morning person. Additionally, I saw a way around the obstacle on the writing road–and it involves simply going off that particular path and trailblazing a new way! Perhaps my dreaming mind worked out the problem, and I came to understand how two plots, not one intertwine in the book.  And that has made all the difference.

Now I know the direction to take the rest of the book. I am sure now that, except for any kind of unusual circumstances, I will complete this first draft by the end of August.

Then it will be time for revisions and to begin another first draft!

What Are Your Works In Progress?

Standard

To all the writers out there: I hope your work is going well, that you are continuing to write as often as you can, and that your works in progress are, indeed, progressing.

I recently complete draft 3 of a fantasy novel, but it will need at least 2 more drafts, especially because I have overloaded expository information in the opening chapters. So, I will work on including that information in the plot and not simply give it. That will be the focus of the 4th draft.

I am also a little more than halfway through the 1st draft of a political thriller, which I am hoping will be done by the end of August.

So, to all the writers who read this:

What are your works-in-progress?

The Pleasure of Reading! Revisited!

Standard

book-clouds-873442_960_720

I have spent the majority of my time on this blog writing about writing, so I thought I would address the most fundamental and most important part of this experience with books: reading.

I have been reading my entire life; in fact, I cannot remember a time when I did not read. And reading has informed my life in many ways, not only in terms of career but also in the joys of life itself.

I read books, I teach them, and I write about them, but mostly, I enjoy them. I remember my mother telling me when I was very little that you can go many places that you might not ever have a chance to visit, real and made up, if you read. And I have visited and continue to journey to real and fantastic lands.

I am not a reading snob. While I teach college English Literature, I read in a very wide range, from adventure and horror to drama and so-called high literature, although I am not so certain that this distinction is accurate. Both Shakespeare and Dickens were considered popular writers in their time. Hemingway straddled the mythical fence of literature and genre writing. Today, I happily read authors in a multitude of genres, including Stephen King and John Connolly, among many others. So, I read whatever I choose, in any area. And I get great pleasure from the reading.

I hope that all people can experience this pleasure. I realize not everyone will, but I can keep hoping they do.

Which Living Writer Would You Like To Write A Review Of Your Book?

Standard

question-mark-2123969_960_720

I have been continuing to think about hypothetical writing questions. I have asked which writer you would like to write an introduction to your book, so I began thinking about who you might like to read and review your work. I do not mean that it would happen, because I doubt that I could get a review from my choice. I still think, though, it is an interesting question.

For my books Maledicus: The Investigative Paranormal Society, Book I and Gallows Hill: The Investigative Paranormal Society, Book 2 , if it were possible, I would ask, and I would be honored if he agreed, Stephen King to review them.  Not only is King the Master of Horror, but also he is one of our greatest living writers. No matter what he might say about my books, I would love to know what he thinks of them.

So, I ask all of you: what living writer would you like to review one or more of your books?
