Independent Bookstore Day

April 27, 2019 is Independent Bookstore Day, and all readers and writers should celebrate the day and support independent bookstores!

Independent bookstores are increasing in number over the last few years, which is comforting and encouraging for readers and writers alike.

I would like to feature one bookstore in my area that is a wonderful place, and it does what many such bookstores do–it fosters a community or readers, both adult and children, and offers various events, ranging from readings, to open mike nights to game nights. This store is Firefly Bookstore in downtown Kutztown, PA, near a small public university and not far from where I live.

Firefly Bookstore is a wonderful establishment, and if you are ever in this area, please visit it.

Their website is Firefly Bookstore.

Do you know an independent bookstore that you can feature?

Libraries and Bookstores of the Lehigh Valley, PA: Linderman Library at Lehigh University

I mentioned a little over a week ago that I was beginning a new series on libraries and bookstores of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, and I am finally making the first entry in that series. My beginning piece will feature the beautiful Linderman Library of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

Linderman Library is the humanities library, and it is my favorite place on campus. I earned my M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature at Lehigh University, and this extraordinary abode of books is a comforting and inspiring place to work. I have spent many hours doing research and writing in this safe haven for book people.

Linderman Library has many places to work, including a long reading room, which feels like something out of Hogwarts from the Harry Potter books, many nooks with desks, and one of the best features of the library–the rotunda. Several levels of books fill the outside circle, and a winding metal staircase goes from the first to the third floor.

One of the most beautiful features that is often missed is the dome that caps the rotunda. It is one of striking beauty,  and made of stained glass. If you have the opportunity to visit Lehigh University, you should go to Linderman Library, visit the rotunda, and look up at the dome!

I am fortunate to live in an area with so many bookstores and libraries, and I was doubly fortunate to attend a University with a humanities library that is not only filled with thousands of volumes of books and journals, but also it is beautiful. The very nature of its architecture encourages students to study in its comfortable environment.

I will continue this series on libraries and bookstores in the Lehigh Valley, PA soon.

National Book Lovers Day!!!

August 9 is National Book Lovers Day, and that makes it one of the best days of the year! This is a time to celebrate the people who read and love books–bibliophiles!  I am assuming if you are reading this post, that you are also a book lover.

(Prague Library —

No matter the place from which you get your books, whether it be libraries, bookstores, or online, the having and reading of books is one of the greatest pleasures of life! Reading can be done almost anywhere–in a park, in a home, in a cubicle, on a bus or train, or on the beach (and these are certainly not the limits of possible reading locales).  Wherever you might be while reading, you can be transported into many other worlds, through the connection of the writer’s words to the reader’s imagination. That is one of the most wonderful relationships possible!

I have to thank my mother for helping to instill this love of reading into my soul. I have been reading since I was 3, and it is a crucial part of my being. It is also one of the most important abilities for children not only to develop but also and, perhaps more importantly, to love. If a child has the love of reading, it should stay with him or her forever.

Celebrate your books and your love of reading!
