I hope all of you have had a wonderful weekend, but I also hope you remember why this holiday, Memorial Day, exists. The word “holiday” comes from “holy day,” and the remembrance of this day and its purpose should be sacred. It was originally known as Decoration Day after the end of the Civil War, and it was designated Memorial Day in the 20th Century.
This day is intended to honor, give thanks, and remember those who have sacrificed their lives for The United States of America. Please honor the fallen and the wounded on this day. I realize the day was meant originally for the dead, but I extend my wishes and thanks to the wounded also. Regardless of political beliefs or stands on a war, these are the men and women who fought to keep us safe, and they deserve our remembrance.
They deserve our thanks and our honor.
Please keep in mind that this day is not merely the beginning of the summer season, nor is it intended to be the time of a special sale. This should be a sacred and somber time. There will be plenty of opportunity for shopping and vacationing afterwards. Please remember those who sacrificed.
My adopted father Captain Bob Hoke served in the U.S Navy from 1961 through the end of his Navy career in 1976. He died unexpectedly in his own bed at home in 2015. I miss him every day. He often signed his name Captain Doctor Dad Grandpa Bob Sir J.S.P.S. – The J.S.P.S stood for “just some poor schmuck”

Over the past several days, I’ve noticed that the blogging commmunity has been particularly at reminding its members to observe Memorial Day in the way it was intended. And I’m grateful for the reminders.

Hi Liz, It is important to keep certain days as they were intended.

I agree. The shift away seemed to come when national holidays were moved to Mondays for the three-day weekend.

Related to Liz’s 3 day weekend comment: When I studied advertising in college (a brief moment of insanity. My only defense is that I was only 18) there was a section about the strategy of using holidays and consumer sales to boost a brand. It felt cynical and craven even to 18 year old me. The adult me now thinks such “holiday” advertisements played a strong role in the diminishing of civic minded celebrations…the migration of a civic concept from a communal public focused celebration (aka speeches, parades) to an individual focus (aka store sales, private backyard bbq’s)

Sue, you make an excellent analysis.

What you say about the shift to an individual focus makes perfect sense, sadly. (I definitely can’t see you in advertising!)

Here in la belle France, Remembrance Day or Armistice Day takes place on November 11. However, there are other days in the year when those who made the ultimate sacrifice are honored. Though not French, my father was here in his war, both grandfathers fought here in their war. I remember them all, despite never knowing one of them. My Swedish grandfather brought TB back with him and succumbed a few years later. We remember them all.
