Fishing during the salmon run,

in the Knight Inlet,

British Columbia, Canada.

This set of four cubs was unusual. The smaller cubs will have a harder time in winter.

The bears congregate to gorge on salmon and pack on fat for the winter.

Fights break out over territory in the river,

but none we saw were serious.

The bears are extremely adept at swimming in the river,

and seemed to enjoy taking rests in the cool water.

Even the cubs love to fish and eat!

This mama griz and cub we encountered on the trail in Glacier National Park. An inland bear and cub, not stuffed on salmon, is a far more threatening sight, and you can see mama go on high alert!

She soon relaxed, and even nursed in our presence, after she saw we kept our distance. (You can see these photos by clicking on the following links).

Horror changes when you stop just being a reader of Horror and instead choose to write it.  

Not only do questions arise about who you choose for characters and how they are depicted, but questions take shape around the relevance of plots and the potential for constructing a Literary message that might emerge from your once-invigorating first draft. We often aren’t yet thinking too seriously about the Bigger Picture – the one that suggests we might be writing Horror in a bubble. We don’t notice we are picturing an editor who looks like us, and instead we occupy ourselves with the worries of most novice writers – worries about craft and relevance, about choosing just the “right” marketing venue. We are just writers writing. Or so we think.

Covid-19 has actually made teachers rethink how to best teach young children.  At school, we decided that spending more time outside is better for children.  We teachers all know the benefits of nature, yet the demands of what children need to learn, including providing opportunities for technology, have pushed nature aside over the years.

Not this year!

At last we are back to basics, the root of investigating and discovery. Thank goodness.

The erosion of outdoor play in schools, and also art and music, has been a thorn in my side for decades.  Parents want their child to succeed, and they think computer programs and phonics are the way to go.  They want school to have straight instruction.  The problem is, children need to figure things out on their own, and that happens with teacher and parent support, not direction.

Public schools answer to parents.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if…
