Quotations on Perseverance

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”

                                                                       Maya Angelou

NPG x13208; Herbert George Wells by George Charles Beresford

“If you fell down yesterday, stand up today.”

                                                                       H. G. Wells

“Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don’t have the strength.”

                                                                     Theodore Roosevelt

  1. Thank you for these quotes, Charles. I was reminded by the latest set of personal essays from my class that the adult students I’ve been working with for so many years have the perseverance described in these quotes. It’s quite remarkable and humbling to witness.

  2. Teddy R knew a thing, or two, about ‘going on’. A fascinating and exciting read about TR is ‘The River of Doubt’, about TR’s journey of an unknown and wild river through the Amazon jungle.

  3. Charles, I would have to say that Roosevelt is my choice, because going on…facing the worse you can face, without strength, is an act of courage. It says so much about the human ability to persevere under the worse conditions, and those that have that ability, I believe, never see that the glass is half empty. Thank you for another great philosophical approach to life’s problems, with these great quotations. Sometimes, a simple quote can and does often help a person see the light and the way out or through, a difficult situation. This success, either small or big, can lead to other successes along the way.
