As I was in bed last night, beginning to fall asleep, I suddenly had a fire of understanding about my fantasy novel, which is now near the completion of its second draft. I was very tired and did not want to get up, but I have learned never to ignore such realizations. If I do not at least jot down a few sentences, the new comprehension would be gone in the morning.
This nocturnal understanding will certainly set up the work for the third draft of this work in progress. The setting is now completely different from what it had been, and the basis for the major characters became clarified. I now understand why they are doing what they are doing, and what the foundations of their relationships.
Now, it is time to get started on draft # 3!
Have any of you had such late night sudden writing understandings?

All the time! I often wake up in the middle of the night with a solution to a problem. If I don’t write it down I either lose it or cannot sleep!

I wonder if it happens to many writers.

It happens to me, not just when sleeping, but exercising, reading, watching a movie, etc. A sudden realization hits, and issues are resolved.

I get my blinding revelations in the shower.

We all get them in interesting places and times!

This happens for me, as well. Online, I once saw a writing pad with “pen” meant to be hung and used in the shower for this very purpose!

I have had great ideas hit me during the night, Charles. I get up and write them down so as not to forget them. YOur book is extremely creepy. I have to stop and read some poetry or I can’t sleep.

I hope that means you are enjoying it! Or you should read it during the day.

All the time. I live my books when I’m writing them. Nighttime ideas are the norm. The trick is getting something jotted down that is readable in the morning.

it those characters; they wait until you aren’t looking and then start discussing plot, structure, twists, you name it. They hope you aren’t listening but, ha! we catch them out….

Yes, we do, and we try to hear what they are saying!

Yes Charles, it seems you have many who share this sudden visit by revelation. It is almost like being taken over for a while and I would grieve if those moments disappeared.
Be it middle of the night, in the shower, just any seemingly unsuitable time. 😊 .

It happens often, but not always in the middle of the night. It’s when I have no access to pen and paper, like when taking a walk, that it’s frustrating. I’m glad you got up and took some notes. Those moments are exhilarating.

Yes, they are. Perhaps you can get a notepad that hangs from a belt! That would be great for writers.

Yup. I finally gave up and just get up. At 3:00 a.m. every day.

Uh huh. It was get up or toss and turn with a grumpy Muse whispering characters into my head and trying to wake up enough to write things down. Now I am at the ready, keyboard at fingertips…

And the muse is happy now!

Happens to me all the time – I’ve learned to keep paper and pen at my bedside.
It happens most frequently when I’m driving (which I do a lot of, for work)and I’ve solved that one with a dictaphone. Now I don’t have to pull over to write things down!

I haven’t been able to figure out how to do it on my phone hands-free while I’m driving, so I’m still pulling over to write it down.

That’s why I use a Dictaphone instead of my phone – slide the ‘on’ button up and then press record. No need to look at it, I know it by feel. I would have a problem with my phone too, even though it has a record facility, because I would have to look at it to access the app.
