“I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”


For the President

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

  1. On this day, March 4, 4 Presidents were inaugurated: G Washington (2nd term), A Lincoln (2nd term), c Coolidge, F Roosevelt. We discussed it at our school crossing this morn. I think these quotes in the Constitution would be good topics for our ‘Curbside Classroom’.

  2. I would guarantee that mr what’s his name has never read it nor knows anything about it. He’d swear to anything to make a buck. I can’t remember all the words anymore but then I can’t remember what I had for breakfast either but my mother had to take a test on it to become a citizen.

  3. A nitpick: while the Constitution does state that members of Congress must take an oath or affirmation to support the Constitution, it does not specify the language for same. And since the very same Article VI states that no religious test “shall ever be required” to hold office, the inclusion of “So help me God.” is of questionable legality.

  4. Thank you for sharing this. Lincoln gave the most beautiful speech in NYC on Feb 27 1860. The Cooper Union Address. He researched the Constitution deeply as well as those individuals ratifying it with their signatures. The structured method of his arguement was as beautiful as the words.
