Who Is Your Favorite Mystery Writer?

I hope you have been enjoying this series on favorite writers; I certainly have been. I was thinking about the next group of writers to consider, and I was inspired by preparing for my Wednesday night class at the Wescoe School of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. It is a First Year Seminar, Muhlenberg’s college’s name for the freshman writing course.  My course is “The Detective in Film and Literature.” We have read Poe, Doyle, and we are starting Agatha Christie tomorrow.

So, my list of favorite mystery writers, always a difficult prospect to narrow down, follows.

First my absolute favorite is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer of the greatest of detectives–Sherlock Holmes.

My second mystery writer is John Connolly, a contemporary Irish writer whose work combines mystery with the supernatural. His writing is both dark and lyrical. His detective is Charlie Parker.

My third choice is actually a writing team: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, who have several characters, but my favorite is F.B.I. Special Agent Pendergast. Their work is engaging and imaginative; they also combine mystery with suggestions of the supernatural. I always look forward to their next book.

My question for all of you is this: who are your favorite mystery writers?

  1. Mystery is my favorite genre, so I have many! These are the 3 that I don’t miss when they have a new book published. Marcia Muller is a great California author who writes the mystery series I’ve been reading the longest; her character is Sharon McCone, who is a private investigator. Louise Penny, from Canada, writes the wonderful Three Pines mysteries about Inspector Gamache. My most recent favorite is Elly Griffiths, a British author who writes the Ruth Galloway (forensic archaeologist) series.

  2. Michael Connelly – the first book of his I read was called “The Poet” – after that one I was hooked. Jeffrey Deaver – although I enjoyed some of his earlier books I have kind of lost interest in his later stuff – and T. Jefferson Parker. The first book of his I read was called “The Serpents Lair”….it was brilliant. Of course there’s always Lee Child.

My favorite Mystery writer is Agatha Christie. I haven’t read Sherlock Holmes but I am planning to as soon as I finish all the books which are one my immediate TBR.

  4. James Runcie and his Grantchester Mysteries — I just love those. I also love that he dedicates all his books to his wife and that his wife is named Marilyn because it always feels like he’s dedicating his books to ME!! 🙂 And I also love pretty much anything by Agatha Christie.
