This is an excellent, important, and timely quotation.

  1. Civilization and democracy are frail things, every time we look away, say nothing, stand for nothing, another thread comes undone and then, like other civilizations, the fabric of who we are, is undone, but we can mend it. Don’t walk away, thinking other people will stand in your stead, it takes all of us, of every creed, race, and belief. My mother use to say, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything!”

We are a country of immigrants, of many races, of many beliefs, of many creeds, and we are fortunate to be able to express our individuality within our democratic society. I am grateful for democracy, this Thanksgiving. Yet, as other societies have learned, our way of life, can disappear in a flash, when decency, a lack of respect for others, tribalism, nativism, and hatred looms large, we risk losing everything we hold dear: freedom to believe as we choose.
