“Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people.”

Standard

This is an excellent quotation from one of my favorite philosophers.

Art of Quotation

โ€œTruth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people.โ€

  1. I’m not sure about that. Facts don’t change according to how many people believe them, although they do change for other reasons. “The truth,” however, is more shifty. The truths that Jefferson et al. claimed to be self-evident aren’t self-evident at all, as evidenced that plenty of people either don’t believe them or have to work out elaborate arguments for why they’re true. Over the years I’ve grown ever more skeptical of those who believe that “the truth” is eternal and unchanging, not least because they’re often hostile to anyone who disagrees with their particular piece of it.

  2. I also wish people would stop using the statements of others as “facts”…. that someone MADE a statement may be true and may be a FACT, however the CONTENT of the statement itself may not be FACTUAL or TRUE.

Methinks we have far too many spin doctors and far too few students of English language in this country…. Thank heavens so many of us washed out of the sciences to become English majors and vocal word-analysts….
